(Port) Wine of the month Mai 2019: Warre Vintage Port 1963
Although many people speculate that 1966 will outlive the 1963 Vintage Ports and some even do prefer the 1970s, I am very much convinced that 1963 is a fantastic Port year.
Although many people speculate that 1966 will outlive the 1963 Vintage Ports and some even do prefer the 1970s, I am very much convinced that 1963 is a fantastic Port year.
Not only Fonseca, Taylor or Graham have bottled incredible Vintage Ports from 63, the “Vintage of the Century” also is a 1963 – the fantastic Noval Nacional which I was lucky to taste this year again very surprisingly on a Niepoort Vintage Port tasting in Porto.
My surprise Port this year is the Warre 1963 Vintage Port. Still surprisingly young with breathtaking finesse, tobacco and pepper, this Port’s bouquet is extremely seductive. The palate is not massive, but extremely well balanced with good portions of milk chocolate, white pepper, malt and honey, well supported by a fantastic level of acidity. Long and persistent aftertaste. In a direct comparison no one liked the Warre 1970 better. 19/20
